Green House

Sitting in any room of the house, I feel like I am sitting outside. Nature seems to have penetrated the air inside the house, accompanying light and shadow. The name of the house is 'Green Leaf'. The house has received this year's Arcasia Award for Architecture, an international award. The green leaves are inside and outside in this report

Looking at the road, it is difficult to understand the existence of the house. Instead, think of 30-35 feet high trees, piles of shrubs, or small mounds. The green is also quite dark. Noon has rolled in, so the sunlight tilted to the west has created a silhouette.

There are tens of gates in front of the house. And there are high walls. "Let's go in," said Sabuj Siddiqui, the owner of the house. Managing partner and painter of fashion house Desal.

After crossing the gate, amazement. That was the next few hours. Open brick and concrete structures, no extra plaster. The whole house is covered with shrubs. Get up front. There seems to be no difference between the yard and the house. The outside air is entering the room and coming out smoothly. Then in the afternoon, golden light and shadow are playing in a hurry. In no way can it be separated from the external nature. The people of the house also wanted it.

The house we are talking about is called 'Green Leaf'. The project has received the Arcasia Awards for Architecture 2021, the Architects Regional Council Asia (Arcasia) Award, and an organization of Asian architects. Architect Asiya Karim and Architect Naeem Ahmed Kibria and their organization have received honorary awards in the category of Indigenous Single Family Residential Project. This time, a housing project in Dhaka called 'The Statesman' has won the Arcasia Award in the category of Multi-Family Residential Complex. It was designed by Shahla K Kabir and Shuvro Shovan Chowdhury, two architects of Studio Morphogenesis Limited. This time Arcadia awarded prizes in 11 categories out of 224 projects in 15 countries.

The green leaf house is in Savar upazila. On the Dhaka-Aricha highway, a short distance to the left of Hemayetpur is Purbahati, here is the house. He has been to this place before, to see another house. Desal's two other managing partners are Kanak Aditya and Ishrat Jahan in a two-storey wooden house. The house is also a part of nature with a small pond covered with tiles.

Kanak and Sabuj, two friends, bought land a few minutes' walk away. They are living in a house there. Sabuj said, ‘I bought the land in 2010. Twenty-one percent. Then I planted the tree. When I was a student of Fine Arts (Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka), I met Deepa Apar (Asiya Karim), a student of BUET's Department of Architecture. At that point I said, 'My house, but you design it.'

Talking about the design of the house, Asiya Karim said, "It used to be casual then. Green is our friendship. One day he also bought land. I started designing his house in 2015. The first thing that comes to mind is that Konak's house is aesthetic and blends in with nature, so the green house nearby should also become a part of nature. Our understanding with the greens here was pretty good. So in architectural design, as we wanted, as they wanted, it was done well. It has been two years since the construction of this house was completed. '

The Green Leaf Arcasia won the award for single-family home. There are four family members in this house. Sabuj Siddiqui, his wife Kazi Tania Farzana and their daughter Pata Angrupini and son Mahadi Mostafa. The name of the house is green leaf with the names of father and daughter. Kazi Tania said, the house is private. We tried to figure out how to do it well, how to stay well. Our daughter is not old and our son is three years old. They are growing with nature, that is the big find. '

He also saw the sample. Mahadi is running around the yard again in the blink of an eye. Basar Lata is hanging next to the front door on the ground floor of 1800 square feet. Callie is gone. Sabuj and Tania said, the flowers will bloom in a few days. Maroon, some yellow again.

There is a huge range of doors that can be felt through the door. The roof is high, spacious up to three floors along the stairs. Downstairs dining table leaves, sitting room to the right. Kitchen after dining table. There is also a living room on this floor. But the houses are like houses. Large windows, glass doors can be folded into a wooden frame. So it seems to be completely open. Adequate lighting. Because of the plants, the light paints all the designs on the walls of the house, on the floor of the house.

Kazi Tania said, ‘Wherever you sit at home, you can just turn your head and see the sky and the green. The house plants have been planted in accordance with the rules of ecology. There is no cactus or bonsai in this house. There is no tree that has roots on the wall. '

The two-story houses are large, open. The verandah of the south-facing house has been raised a little on the second floor. Green said, ‘The second floor is 2200 square feet. Here is the home of all of us. There is a veranda with each house, one cannot see from another veranda. My studio is in some part of the third floor. '

Sabuj Siddiqui holds a bachelor's and master's degree in printmaking from the Faculty of Fine Arts. Thirteenth National Young Artist won the award in 2000 at the Art Exhibition. Several pictures of his buffalo series were seen on different walls of the house. The studio also has a printing press. In this studio, Paata also occasionally shares with her father. Sit down and draw various pictures.

A large part of the three-story roof is open. On a full moon night, the whole house is filled with light. Birds come all the time as there are mango, blackberry, jackfruit, guava, white, salt, bell, papaya, coconut, pomegranate, big, jamrul, various grape trees. Belly, Jaba, Gandharaja, Shiuli, Bakul, Kathgolap, Konakchampa, Jarul, Kamini, Kadam etc. are spread in different seasons.

As Kazi Tania and Sabuj said, there are more or less flowers throughout the year. And many kinds of birds come around them. Pigeons and tuntunis make their home in the bushes of creepers.

All the materials that can be used to mix with nature have been made in this house, said Asiya Karim. He said, "We understand the climate of the place and practice everything that can be taken from nature in all our installations." So here too. Since long ago, I have tried to keep the nature as it was here. There is no grill on the windows or doors of this house. So that there is no obstacle to see nature outside. The landscape of our country is kind of a little jungle. It has been kept here as much as possible. Those who stay at home have a dream come true. That is to understand the design. And it's a matter of lifestyle. Security issues have therefore been addressed differently. '

Kanak and Sabuj's two families are all friends. That's why on the evening of November 17, when our work was finally coming to an end, Kanak came to Sabuj's house. Himel froze in the air and chatted. Kanak Aditya sings the song — I sit on the bank of the river of life and count the small waves / I hear the song of the falling leaves lying under the tree of hope...
